HTC is coming back

HTC's upcoming smartphone will integrate many virtual reality applications for the metaverse experience.

During a press conference at the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2022) on March 2, Charles Huang, HTC's regional director for Asia - Pacific, said that the company will introduce a new high-end smartphone model in April. , marking the return of the Taiwanese company in this segment after many years of absence.

According to DigiTimes , HTC's upcoming phone will integrate many virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) applications for the metaverse experience, a term that many technology companies are interested in recently.

At MWC 2022, HTC introduced its own metaverse called Viveverse. With a company focused on developing VR headsets for years like HTC, it's not surprising to launch the metaverse to keep up with the trend.

According to 9to5Google , HTC's latest VR headset model, Vive Flow VR, was released in October 2021, requiring an Android smartphone to control. As a result, HTC's upcoming device could link to Vive Flow VR, although it's unclear how that will support the metaverse experience.

In the past, many big companies have abandoned their plans to bring VR to smartphones like Google with the Daydream VR project in 2019 or Samsung when "killing" the Gear VR platform 2 years ago.

Despite selling off its smartphone business in 2018, HTC still launched a few devices that did not attract much attention, including the blockchain-integrated Exodus 1 model or mid-range models. In 2021, the company launched a few smartphones such as Desire 21 Pro 5G (January), Wildfire E3 (March) and Wildfire E2 Plus (December).

According to TechRadar , HTC's upcoming metaverse smartphone may just be experimental, similar to the Exodus 1, instead of being sold widely to increase sales.

Cher Wang, co-founder and CEO of HTC, said the company plans to continue investing in VR products on a large scale. Currently, HTC focuses on selling to business (B2B) with conferencing and online shopping solutions, while denying withdrawing from the smartphone market.
